Literacy Directives
All teachers are responsible for a school-wide literacy focus that will include
cross curricular collaboration of Reading strategies.
1. All classrooms will maintain a print rich environment that will include a variety of
all types of literature at different readability levels.
2. All teachers will attend applicable training sessions in the K-12 Reading Modules,
Reading to Writing connections,and reflection and processing time.
3. Word walls will be used, according to protocol, in all classrooms and teachers will
incorporate them into subject area vocabulary lessons.
4. Fluency focus will be on expression and accuracy. LA teachers will assist in this
through oral reading modeling and conventions instruction vs. fluency chunking,
pausing and expression.
5. All teachers will incorporate a writing connection whenever possible. This can be
done through assigned reflection journals, personal connections, summaries and
"Write for the Future" activities.
6. All Professional Development Plans (PDP) will include at least one literacy component
with measurable results.
7. Teachers will employ higher level thinking questions in lessons using Bloom's or Cognitive
Complexity Classifications, Costa's and Cue words; and instruct in query questioning techniques.
8. Reading progress will be displayed on data walls in all classrooms.
