Mrs. Arbelaez - AVID Coordinator |
***
Jackson Middle School is very proud to be one of only two National Demonstration AVID schools in Florida. AVID stands for
Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is an academic elective class that students must apply to be in. We meet daily to
assist them in their other classes (as they are placed in at least 1 honors class) and work on note-taking, organization, reading,
writing, inquiry and collaboration. The AVID students are in the academic middle. They have potential and the desire to attend
college. Most will be the first in their family to attend/graduate from college.
We look for students who demonstrate the following characteristics:
- B average students
- Motivated and hard-working
- First in family to attend college
- Free-reduced lunch
- Level 2 or higher on FCAT
- Interest in college and school in general
- Good conduct in school
Potential students go through an application and interview process to see if they will be a good fit for the program. If you would
like more information or are interested in applying, please contact Mrs. Arbelaez, the AVID Coordinator, at 407-249-6430 ext 2324

What is AVID?
In a sea of questions,
It is the life boat.
In a storm of misunderstanding,
It is the beacon of light.
In the disaster area of a teen's book bag,
It is the clean-up crew.
In the day before a mid-week Science quiz,
It is the strand of hope.
This is AVID, and I'm proud to be an AVID student.
